About the Chandler Burning Index (CBI)

Chandler Burning Index

The Chandler Burning Index (CBI) uses air temperature and relative humidity to create a numerical  index of  fire danger. That number is then equated to an Adjective Fire Danger. It's based solely on weather conditions, with no adjustment for fuel moisture.

Here on the SLOweather.com site, the CBI is calculated from the current weather conditions and reflects the current calculated fire danger.  We also use forecast weather data from our Wxsim program to predict the CBI for the next several days.

The NWS also calculates a 30 day Chandler Burning Index based on forecast weather conditions for the month.
